The Star Spangled Banner

September 13, 1814- Following a hard battle at Fort McHenry, the Star Spangled Banner was writen by Francis Scott Key 197 years ago. Key was a prisoner on a British warship and watched his country being attacked by the British. Throughout the long, dark night he peered out of his boat to see if the American flag was still flying over Fort McHenry. As he looked out on the morning following the battle, he was hoping that the American flag would still be flying. He wrote the poem the Star Spangled Banner to put into words how he was feeling.

All of the students are studying the history of the Star Spangled banner this week. It has been very intersting to listen to them compare what Francis Scott Key was feeling as he watched his country come under attack in 1814 and what they think Americans felt 10 years ago on September 11th,2001. We have had some great discussions about the meaning behind the poem written 197 years ago and how the song can be interpreted today. Consider asking your children their thoughts on the song. We learned what all of the words mean. Do you know what a rampart is? I didn't when I was younger. See if your child knows what it is!
